Iowa Veterans Home Emergency Plans

Safety is at the core of what we do, and our staff have plans to care for our residents if disaster strikes.

We hold quarterly fire drills in all buildings and during all staff shifts to be sure everyone is prepared. We also hold annual tornado drills in the spring. And local first responders partner with us to hold a major disaster drill to test our systems.

Our plans include protocols for these events:

  • Evacuation and sheltering in place.
  • Severe weather.
  • Fires.
  • Crisis response.
  • Bomb threats.
  • Bioterror response.
  • Hazardous materials.
  • Lockdown alerts.
  • All hazards.

Resident Relocation

If a disaster requires us to relocate residents, we have a plan to receive help from other agencies. We have agreements to house our residents at other facilities, and we have procedures for transporting residents, their medication, and their supplies during the transition.

Family Notification

We will notify families about emergencies as soon as possible.

Families have the right to evacuate their loved one on their own and move them to a special needs shelter, or their own home if they choose. Families can meet residents at a designated shelter location.

To get information, the family can call the Iowa Veterans Home switchboard at 641-752-1501 or 641-485-0752.
