Wait List Information
We would love to provide a home for every eligible veteran, spouse and Gold Star Family member who wishes to join us. However, due to space and regulatory requirements, moving into the Iowa Veterans Home can take time.
How long is the wait?
There is no fixed or "required" waiting period. The time it takes to be admitted is based on two specific factors:
- Level of Care: During the application process, our staff conducts an evaluation to determine the specific level of clinical care a future resident needs.
- Availability: Once that level of care is determined, admission depends on available space within a unit that serves that level of care.
Because our resident needs change, wait times for different levels of care fluctuate. A unit that is full today may have an opening tomorrow, while others may have a longer list.
Be Proactive: Apply Early
We strongly suggest proceeding with an application as soon as possible—even if the need for a move isn't immediate. Having the admissions process and evaluation completed ahead of time is the best way to avoid "emergency" situations. It ensures that when the veteran is ready, we are already prepared to welcome them, significantly reducing stress for the family.
